Inspiration

My process starts with an impulse, an inspiration, a spark. Nature has long been my muse, it grounds me. It was my playground as a child and still brings me joy every day. I’m a visual explorer and see patterns everywhere - art deco jewelry I notice in a book, a decorated fence in a remote village in Jaipur or an old wallpaper design in my grandmother's room. All my designs have history, a story and each one is authentic and meaningful to me – and hopefully to you.

Creating

For over two decades my tools have barely changed: cutting papers, painting with India ink, drawing with black marker pens, creating shapes and motifs by hand, gluing it together with rubber cement.

Creating for me is raw and very tactile and often meditative. It’s a journey I take with my patterns, sometimes with a clear destination and sometimes where the wind takes us.  It liberates me, not chained to a computer screen but adrift with my shapes and patterns made by my hands.

Before color comes character, my artwork and designs start as black and white because color changes everything, mood, purpose and intent.

Production

Our mission is to create small, limited and special collections that are meaningful, purposeful and that bring joy.

Supporting ethical companies and independent craftspeople locally and abroad gain and maintain financial independence and security is vital for me. I firmly believe in not losing artisan craftsmanship, such as screen-printing, to digitization.

We work with a small foundation supporting young women to learn new professional skills like sewing. We work with screen printers and local stitching houses who have performed their craft for generations. Wherever possible, non-toxic, water-based inks are paired with organic cottons, with every scrap and remnant repurposed. An endless quest for sustainable options will continue with upcycled materials.

Over the years, our business has been fueled not just by patterns but by partnerships. Collaborations and close and meaningful licensing relationships will continue to form a big part of our journey forward.

I have complete faith in the power of patterns; a beautiful wall print brightens a grey day, a colorful napkin adds creativity and style to a dinner party, a stylish and practical apron livens up meal prep, and a fabulous, timeless dress puts a confident and joyful skip in your step.

My biggest joy comes from letting my patterns go to new lives in new homes. Timeless, treasured and thankful.

Life is about living in the small moments not just the big. From stealing a glance at new pillows on an old couch to making your first handsewn shirt. A letter written on thoughtful stationery to a cup of tea in a favorite mug.
